Body Doubling: Why Working Next to Someone Unlocks ADHD Focus — and What the Evidence Actually Says
There is a particular kind of magic that happens when a friend sits at the other end of your kitchen table with their own laptop, says almost nothing for two hours, and you somehow do the tax return you have been avoiding since March. Neither of you helped the other. Nobody checked anything. And yet the thing got done.
The ADHD community calls this body doubling, and it is probably the single most enthusiastically recommended strategy in the whole neurodivergent internet. It is also — and we want to be straight with you about this from the first paragraph — one of the least studied. There is no clinical trial. There is no established mechanism. What exists is a small, young research literature that mostly consists of researchers asking neurodivergent people what they do and writing it down carefully.
We think that is still worth taking seriously. But "lots of people say it helps" and "the science says it works" are different sentences, and most articles on this topic quietly swap one for the other. This one won't.
What is body doubling, exactly?
Body doubling is using the presence of another person to help you start, stay with, or finish a task. That is the whole thing. The other person does not coach you, supervise you, or work on your task — they are simply there, doing their own thing, while you do yours.
The first academic study of the practice was published in 2023 and opens by noting that no prior academic exploration of it existed at all (Eagle, Baltaxe-Admony & Ringland, 2023). The researchers surveyed 220 people, 87.7% of whom identified as neurodivergent (139 with ADHD, 82 autistic), aged 18 to 72. Rather than testing whether body doubling works, they mapped what it is — proposing that it sits on a continuum of space and time (in the same room, on a video call, watching a live stream, even a recording) and of mutuality (a close friend, a colleague, a total stranger).
The extended journal version of that work added a detail we find quietly moving: many participants had been doing this for years without a name for it, and only recognised the strategy once someone described it back to them (Eagle, Baltaxe-Admony & Ringland, 2024). That is worth naming plainly — body doubling is community language, invented and refined by neurodivergent people, not a clinical term. You won't find it in a diagnostic manual or a NICE guideline. It came from people solving their own problem and telling each other.
Does body doubling actually work?
Nobody knows yet, in the sense that "knows" usually means in medicine. As of now there is no randomised controlled trial of body doubling for ADHD, and no clinical outcome study of any kind. Structured searches of the biomedical literature return nothing testing the technique — the entire evidence base sits in human-computer interaction and accessibility research venues, not clinical ones.
Here is the honest ladder of what exists, from strongest to weakest:
- Descriptive survey work. Two peer-reviewed papers from the same research group, based on a 220-person survey, documenting that neurodivergent people use the practice and report it helping them initiate and stay with tasks (Eagle et al., 2023; Eagle et al., 2024). This is real evidence that people use and value it. It is not evidence that it improves performance, because the studies did not measure performance.
- Early exploratory neurophysiology. One small conference paper has begun measuring brain activity during body doubling in adults with and without ADHD (Schuenke, Dickenson & Moore, 2025). We are citing only that this work has started — we have not read its results, and neither should you trust anyone summarising them second-hand.
- A twelve-person preprint. A virtual-reality study reported faster task completion with a body double present, including an AI one. Twelve participants, not peer-reviewed (Ara et al., 2025). Interesting. Not proof of anything.
- A field that says so itself. A 2026 framework paper mapping out mixed-reality body doubling explicitly describes the evidence base as underdeveloped and calls for empirical studies (Tan, Hegemann & Gerken, 2026). That is researchers inside the area saying the same thing we are.
So: real practice, real enthusiasm, near-zero outcome data. Untested is not the same as ineffective — that distinction matters enormously and gets flattened constantly in both directions. Nobody has shown body doubling doesn't work either.
Isn't there research on working alongside other people?
Yes — and this is where most ADHD articles make a leap they haven't earned, so let's walk it slowly. The general phenomenon of performing differently in the presence of others is called social facilitation, and it has been studied since the late nineteenth century. Zajonc's classic formulation proposed that the mere presence of others raises arousal, which strengthens whatever response is already most practised in you (Zajonc, 1965).
Then comes the part that rarely makes it into the ADHD listicles. The definitive meta-analysis pooled 241 studies and roughly 24,000 participants, and found the effects of others' presence were small — and, crucially, directional. Being watched sped people up on simple tasks. On complex tasks it reduced both the speed and the quality of what they produced (Bond & Titus, 1983).
Read that against your actual to-do list. Much of what an ADHD brain avoids is not simple and well-practised; it is novel, ambiguous, and cognitively heavy — the difficult email, the unfamiliar form, the piece of work you have never done before. The classic social facilitation literature predicts that having someone present would make that worse, not better.
We are not saying body doubling harms you. We are saying the tidy explanation — "social facilitation research proves body doubling works" — is an inferential leap nobody in the literature has actually made, and it points the wrong way as often as the right one. If body doubling helps you, it is probably doing something other than what Zajonc described. Accountability? Reduced avoidance? Simply being unable to slip away to another room? We genuinely do not know, and anyone who tells you the mechanism with confidence is improvising.
What is well-evidenced nearby?
That putting the work of self-regulation outside your own head is a serious approach with real data behind it — even though none of that data is about body doubling specifically.
The clearest example is Solanto and colleagues' randomised trial of a twelve-week group programme explicitly targeting time management, organisation and planning in 88 adults with ADHD, tested against supportive psychotherapy as an active comparison rather than a waiting list. The skills programme came out clearly ahead — odds ratio 5.41 (95% CI 1.77–16.55) — and improved not only self-ratings but collateral informant and evaluator ratings too (Solanto et al., 2010). That is a much stronger design than most of what gets cited in this space, and its logic is externalisation: the structure and the other people are doing part of the regulating.
It is also worth noting where UK clinical guidance sits. NICE's ADHD guideline recommends environmental modifications tailored to the individual — changes to seating, lighting and noise, reducing distractions such as with headphones, shorter periods of focus with movement breaks (NICE, 2019). Body doubling is not named there, and we are not going to pretend it is. But it belongs to the same family of moves: change the environment around the brain rather than demanding the brain change itself.
How do you actually try it?
Treat it as an experiment on yourself, not a prescription. A few notes from the descriptive research and from living with this:
- Match the format to the task. Given the simple-versus-complex split in the social facilitation literature, it is reasonable to expect that quiet parallel presence suits routine, well-practised work best — admin, tidying, emails, expenses. If you are doing something genuinely novel and hard, watch whether company helps or crowds you.
- Remote counts. The survey work found body doubling spans in-person, video call, live stream and even recorded content (Eagle et al., 2023). If leaving the house is the barrier, the barrier is removable.
- A stranger can work. Mutuality is a dial, not a switch. Plenty of people report that an anonymous co-working room does the job precisely because there is no social obligation attached.
- Notice what actually changes. Is it that you start sooner? Stop drifting? Feel less dread? Those are different effects with different fixes. Your own observations are the best data available on this question — which, given the state of the literature, is not a joke.
- Drop it without guilt if it doesn't help. It is a widely-loved tool, not a test of whether you are trying hard enough.
